How Skip Bin Sizing Works
Skip bins are measured in cubic metres (m³) of volume, not weight. The easiest mental picture: one cubic metre equals roughly one standard 6×4 box-trailer load, or about four 240L household wheelie bins. So a 6m³ skip swallows six trailer trips you no longer have to make to Benaraby.
Volume is only half the story, though. Every bin also has a practical weight limit, because the truck has to lift it. For light waste — household junk, green waste — you'll run out of space long before weight matters. For heavy waste — concrete, brick, tile, soil — weight is the limit, which is why heavy waste goes in smaller bins. More on that below.
The Full Size Range
2m³ Mini Skip
About 1.8m long × 1.5m wide × 0.9m high — small enough for a tight carport. Holds two trailer loads or eight wheelie bins. Suits a spare-room declutter, a small garden tidy in Kin Kora, or the aftermath of finally cleaning out that cupboard under the stairs. Also the standard size for small concrete or soil loads, because heavy waste caps out fast.
3m³ Mini Skip
Around 2.5m long, same footprint width. Three trailer loads or twelve wheelie bins. The classic bathroom-renovation bin — old vanity, tiles, sheeting and packaging fit with room to spare. 4m³ Skip
Roughly 3.3m long × 1.6m wide × 1m high. Four trailer loads. The kitchen-reno and landscaping workhorse, and a good fit for an end-of-lease clean-out where a houseful of accumulated stuff has to go. If you're tossing up between 3m³ and 4m³, take the 4m³ — this is the range where underestimating is most common.
6m³ Skip
About 3.7m × 1.6m × 1.3m. Six trailer loads or twenty-four wheelie bins. The most-booked size in Gladstone and nationally, because it covers the two biggest jobs households face: moving house and the once-a-decade full garden overhaul. Big enough to matter, small enough to fit on a normal driveway.
8m³ Skip
Around 4.1m × 1.6m × 1.5m, usually with a higher wall. Suits multi-room renovations, roof strips, office clean-outs and builders doing site cleans. This is the size where trade jobs start — see construction and demolition bins.
10m³ Skip
Roughly 4.7m × 1.6m × 1.5m+, often with a rear door so you can walk furniture straight in. Deceased estates, whole-house clear-outs, demolition jobs and major commercial cleans. The Heavy Waste Exception
Concrete, brick, pavers, roof tiles and soil weigh 1.2 to 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre — a 6m³ bin filled with concrete would weigh more than most skip trucks can legally lift. That's why heavy waste is booked into 2m³, 3m³ or 4m³ bins, priced for the weight, and why you should never top up a heavy-waste bin with "just a bit" of general junk (mixed loads cost more to dispose of). Will It Fit at Your Place?
The delivery truck needs about 3m of width and 4m of overhead clearance — watch for low branches, carport roofs and powerlines. Bins up to 4m³ fit almost any Gladstone driveway; 6m³ and up need around 4–5m of straight length.
